Baudin

Also known as: — | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: The Claw (Malazan Empire)

Summary

Baudin is a mysterious and imposing figure who accompanies Felisin Paran and Heboric through the horrors of the Otataral mining camp at Skullcup and their subsequent escape across the desert of Seven Cities. Presented initially as a common thug and criminal, Baudin is gradually revealed to be far more than he appears — a Claw agent secretly tasked by Tavore Paran with protecting her younger sister Felisin.

Baudin's story is one of the most tragically ironic in the series: he endures Felisin's contempt and hatred while silently fulfilling a mission of protection that she never knows about. His sacrifice — dying to save the very person who despises him — embodies the series' recurring themes of hidden nobility, the cost of duty, and the gap between appearance and truth.

Arc by Book

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates

Baudin is introduced in the mining camp at Skullcup on the island of Otataral, where he has been sentenced alongside Felisin and Heboric. He is a large, dangerous man covered in tattoos who seems to be nothing more than a brutal criminal. Felisin, who has been broken by her experiences in the camp, views him with a mixture of fear and contempt.

When the three escape the mining camp during an uprising, Baudin proves himself an unexpectedly capable survivor. He navigates the harsh desert landscape, provides protection, and makes difficult decisions that keep the group alive. Throughout the journey, he endures Felisin's verbal abuse and bitter accusations with stoic silence.

The truth about Baudin emerges gradually: he is a Talon — a member of the old Claw network loyal to the memory of Emperor Kellanved — placed in the mining camp specifically to watch over Felisin. Tavore, who engineered Felisin's arrest during the Cull in Unta as part of a larger political strategy, arranged for Baudin to be her secret protector.

Baudin dies saving Felisin from a D'ivers shapeshifter during the journey through the Path of Hands, sacrificing himself in a last act of protection. Felisin never fully understands who he was or why he died for her — a gap in understanding that deepens the tragedy of her entire arc. It is only later, through Heboric's reflections, that the full measure of Baudin's mission and sacrifice becomes clear.
