Feather Witch

Also known as: — | Race: Letherii (Human) | Warren/Affiliation: Holds (tile reader), later The Errant

Summary

Feather Witch is a Letherii slave among the Tiste Edur who possesses the ability to read the tiles of the Holds — the ancient divination system that predates the Deck of Dragons. She is a complex and ultimately tragic figure whose arc traces a descent from sympathetic slave to power-hungry fanatic, driven by ambition, resentment, and the manipulations of The Errant.

Feather Witch's story explores how oppression can warp a person's relationship with power: having been powerless all her life as a slave, she becomes obsessed with acquiring power for herself, and that obsession ultimately destroys her.

Arc by Book

Book 5: Midnight Tides

Feather Witch is introduced as a fellow Letherii slave alongside Udinaas in the household of the Sengar family. She is beautiful, intelligent, and possesses the rare ability to read the Tiles of the Holds. Her divination skills make her valued but do not free her from slavery.

Feather Witch and Udinaas share a complicated relationship — he is drawn to her, and she shows moments of reciprocation, but her pride and ambition create barriers between them. When Udinaas begins to change through his contact with the wraith of Wither and the power of the Edur, Feather Witch's feelings shift to a mixture of attraction and fear.

Her tile readings during Midnight Tides provide cryptic forewarnings of the Edur invasion of Lether and the larger cosmic forces at play. She senses the involvement of The Errant — the Elder God of chance and manipulation — who begins to take an interest in her abilities.

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

In the conquered Letherii Empire, Feather Witch's arc takes a darker turn. She has become a devotee of The Errant, seeking to restore the old god to power through the Holds and the tile system. Her ambitions grow as she acquires artifacts of power, including a finger of the Errant himself.

Feather Witch's relationship with Udinaas has soured completely — she views him with contempt for his refusal to pursue power. Her obsession with The Errant consumes her, and she becomes increasingly unhinged as she attempts to bind the Elder God to her will.

Her story ends in Reaper's Gale when The Errant, far from being her servant, uses and discards her. Feather Witch's death is a bitter lesson in the danger of seeking to control powers beyond one's comprehension — the very god she worshipped destroys her without a second thought.
