Gamet

Also known as: Fist Gamet, Gimlet | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Malazan Empire

Summary

Gamet is a veteran soldier who served as a household guard for House Paran before being recalled to military duty as a Fist in Tavore Paran's army. An aging, weary man who had hoped his fighting days were over, Gamet is thrust back into command during one of the Empire's most critical campaigns — the march to crush the Whirlwind Rebellion in the Holy Desert of Raraku.

Gamet embodies the theme of the reluctant soldier — a man who has seen too much war but answers the call of duty one final time. His relationship with Tavore is complex: he watched her grow up as a guard in her family's household, and now serves under her command, a reversal that highlights the strangeness of military hierarchy.

Arc by Book

Book 1: Gardens of the Moon

Gamet appears briefly as a House Guard and veteran serving House Paran in the city of Unta. He is part of the domestic background of the Paran family.

Book 4: House of Chains

Gamet's story comes to the fore when Tavore, now Adjunct to the Empress, recalls him to active service as one of her Fists. He is an odd choice — old, past his prime, and suffering from the physical and psychological toll of a lifetime of warfare — but Tavore trusts him precisely because of his connection to her family.

As the army marches through Seven Cities toward Raraku, Gamet struggles with his deteriorating health and growing despair. He is haunted by visions and memories, and the strain of command pushes him toward a breaking point. His interactions with the other officers — the competent Keneb, the bitter Blistig, the enigmatic T'amber — reveal a man who is running on duty alone, his reserves of strength exhausted.

Gamet dies during the campaign, his body finally giving out under the combined weight of age, illness, and the relentless demands of the march. His death is neither heroic nor dramatic — it is the quiet end of an old soldier who simply has nothing left to give. The loss hits Tavore hard, as Gamet was one of her few personal connections in an army of strangers.
