Iron Bars

Also known as: — | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Crimson Guard (Avowed)

Summary

Iron Bars is an Avowed of the Crimson Guard — one of the elite, near-immortal warriors bound by a vow to oppose the Malazan Empire. He leads a small squad of Crimson Guard soldiers who appear in Midnight Tides, operating far from the Guard's usual theater of operations on Genabackis.

Iron Bars is notable for being one of the few Crimson Guard characters to appear prominently in the main series (most Crimson Guard storylines are covered in Ian Cameron Esslemont's novels). His squad provides a military perspective on the events in Lether and demonstrates the extraordinary combat capabilities that make the Avowed legendary.

Arc by Book

Book 5: Midnight Tides

Iron Bars and his small squad — including the mage Corlo and soldiers like Halfpeck — arrive in Letherii territory, separated from the main body of the Crimson Guard. Their presence is mysterious — what Crimson Guard soldiers are doing so far east is never fully explained, hinting at the Guard's wider activities across the world.

Iron Bars and his squad become involved in the defense of Letheras during the Edur invasion. They fight with devastating effectiveness, their Avowed abilities — near-immunity to death, extraordinary combat skills, and centuries of experience — making them a disproportionate force on the battlefield.

Iron Bars forms a connection with Seren Pedac, the Acquitor, and provides protection during the chaos of the invasion. His squad defends civilians and fights alongside the Letherii against the Edur, demonstrating the Guard's principles of martial honor even when far from their sworn enemy.

During the climactic events, Iron Bars confronts Silchas Ruin — one of the most powerful Tiste Andii Soletaken in existence — in a battle that showcases the full extent of Avowed capabilities. The confrontation is extraordinary: a mortal soldier, however enhanced, standing against a being of near-divine power.

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

Iron Bars appears briefly, continuing to navigate the changed political landscape of Edur-controlled Lether. His squad eventually departs Lether to rejoin the Crimson Guard elsewhere.
