Kalam Mekhar
Also known as: Kalam, Corporal Kalam | Race: Human (Seven Cities native) | Warren/Affiliation: Bridgeburners, Bonehunters, formerly ClawSummary
Kalam Mekhar is the deadliest assassin in the Malazan Empire and a founding member of the Bridgeburners. A massive, dark-skinned native of Seven Cities, Kalam was once a member of the Claw — the Empire's elite assassin corps — before joining the Bridgeburners during the Holy Desert campaign. His lethal skills, physical power, and tactical brilliance make him one of the most feared individuals on any battlefield.
Despite his profession, Kalam is a deeply principled man. His partnership with Quick Ben forms one of the series' most enduring friendships — the two complement each other perfectly, with Kalam's direct lethality balancing Quick Ben's elaborate magical schemes. Kalam's loyalty to Whiskeyjack and the Bridgeburners is absolute.
Kalam's attempt to assassinate Empress Laseen in Deadhouse Gates — a one-man mission across an entire continent — is one of the most gripping sequences in the series. His journey through the streets of Malaz City, fighting his way through an entire Claw night, remains one of the defining action sequences of the Malazan saga.
Arc by Book
Book 1: Gardens of the Moon
Kalam serves as the squad assassin under Whiskeyjack in Darujhistan. He works closely with Quick Ben on their elaborate schemes and proves instrumental in the various confrontations that unfold. He recognizes the possession of Sorry early on and helps orchestrate the plan to deal with the threat she poses. His lethal competence is firmly established.
Book 2: Deadhouse Gates
Kalam undertakes an extraordinary solo mission to return to the continent of Seven Cities and assassinate Empress Laseen, carrying the Book of the Apocalypse. His journey takes him across the breadth of the continent during the Whirlwind rebellion. He allies with Minala and faces the treachery of the Red Blades and the Claw. His climactic run through Malaz City, fighting through waves of Claw assassins, is legendary. He ultimately confronts Laseen but the encounter does not go as planned, and he ends up in the Deadhouse.
Book 6: The Bonehunters
Kalam returns to active duty with the Bonehunters and once again takes on the Claw, this time in a devastating battle aboard ships during the flight from Y'Ghatan. His reconciliation with the Malazan military and his continued partnership with Quick Ben drive much of his involvement. He faces Pearl of the Claw in a deadly reckoning.
Book 10: The Crippled God
Kalam serves as one of the Bonehunters' most lethal assets during the final march. He fights in the climactic battles against the forces arrayed against Tavore's army, his assassin skills turned to open warfare. His role in the convergence, alongside Quick Ben, is vital to the army's survival.
