Oponn

Also known as: The Twin Jesters of Chance, the Twins | Race: Gods (ascendants) | Warren/Affiliation: Unaligned — Chance (the Deck of Dragons)

Summary

Oponn is the twin god of chance — two beings who manifest as the Lady (Pull, representing good fortune) and the Lord (Push, representing ill fortune). They occupy the Unaligned position in the Deck of Dragons, reflecting their nature as forces that exist outside the structured power of the High Houses. Their influence is felt through the spinning of a coin — heads for the Lady's favor, tails for the Lord's curse.

Oponn's intervention in mortal affairs is a major catalyst in Gardens of the Moon, where they "touch" Ganoes Paran with their coin, marking him as a nexus of chance and drawing him into the deadly games of gods and ascendants. The Twins are capricious, playful, and dangerous — their favor can turn to ruin in a single coin-flip. They embody the series' recurring tension between fate and free will, suggesting that even the gods cannot fully control the role of chance in the world.

In The Crippled God, their origin is revealed: they were created by the Azathanai, placing them among the oldest designed forces in the cosmological order.

Arc by Book

Book 1: Gardens of the Moon

Oponn plays a pivotal role in the events of Gardens of the Moon. The Twins touch Ganoes Paran with their coin early in the novel, marking him as their instrument. This intervention draws Paran into the convergence at Darujhistan and shields him — or endangers him — at key moments. The spinning coin becomes a recurring motif: Paran survives encounters that should kill him, but only because Oponn's luck runs in both directions.

The Twins also antagonize Shadowthrone and Cotillion, whose careful schemes are disrupted by the unpredictable element of chance. Oponn's interference makes the convergence at Darujhistan even more volatile, as no one — mortal or divine — can predict which way the coin will fall.

Book 3: Memories of Ice

Oponn's influence is referenced as the broader divine games continue. The Twins remain active players in the background, their coin-spinning affecting the fortunes of armies and individuals.

Book 10: The Crippled God

Oponn's origins are revealed — the Twins were created by Azathanai, ancient beings who predate the gods. This revelation places Oponn within the deeper cosmological framework and suggests that "chance" itself is a designed force, not a random one.
