Brukhalian

Also known as: Mortal Sword of Fener's Reve | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Fener (the Boar of Summer)

Summary

Brukhalian is the Mortal Sword of Fener's Reve — the supreme military commander of the Grey Swords, a mercenary religious order devoted to the god of war, Fener. A towering, imposing figure of absolute martial discipline, Brukhalian leads the defense of Capustan against the overwhelming forces of the Pannion Domin in Memories of Ice.

Brukhalian represents the ideal of the warrior-priest: utterly dedicated to his god, his order, and his duty. His leadership of the Grey Swords during the Siege of Capustan is one of the series' finest examples of military resolve against impossible odds. His fate is tied to the larger cosmic drama of Fener's fall from power — when the god is torn from his realm, Brukhalian and the Grey Swords lose their divine patron at the worst possible moment.

Book 3: Memories of Ice

Brukhalian commands the Grey Swords in Capustan, a city-state under threat from the Pannion Domin's expansionist crusade. The Grey Swords have been contracted to defend the city alongside its own meager garrison and the fractious Mask Council of priest-rulers.

Brukhalian is portrayed as an extraordinary military leader — methodical, fearless, and deeply devoted to his soldiers. He works alongside his two key officers: Shield Anvil Itkovian, who bears the grief and suffering of others, and Destriant Karnadas, who channels Fener's healing power. Together, the three form a triumvirate that is the Grey Swords' spiritual and military heart.

When the Pannion armies — including the horrifying Tenescrowri (cannibal hordes) and the K'ell Hunters — assault Capustan, Brukhalian leads a defense that is both heroic and futile. The city's defenses are undermined by the Mask Council's incompetence and treachery, and the Grey Swords bear a disproportionate share of the fighting.

The crisis deepens when Fener is dragged from his warren into the mortal world (a consequence of events involving Heboric in Deadhouse Gates), severing the Grey Swords' divine connection. Without their god's power, the order's priests and healers are crippled. Brukhalian faces this catastrophe with characteristic resolve, refusing to abandon the defense.

Brukhalian falls in the fighting at Capustan, killed in battle against the Pannion forces. His death is a watershed moment for the Grey Swords — without their Mortal Sword, the order must find new purpose. Itkovian takes on an expanded role, and the Grey Swords eventually rededicate themselves to new patrons (Togg and Fanderay, the Wolves of Winter).

Brukhalian's death and the Grey Swords' stand at Capustan become legendary — a testament to what disciplined soldiers can achieve even when abandoned by their gods and their allies.
