Kuru Qan
Also known as: Ceda | Race: Human (Letherii) | Warren/Affiliation: Holds-based Letherii sorcerySummary
Kuru Qan is the Ceda — the supreme sorcerer — of the Letherii kingdom, an aged and eccentric mage of extraordinary power. Serving King Ezgara Diskanar, Kuru Qan commands the Letherii magical defenses and is one of the few people in the kingdom who genuinely understands the magnitude of the Tiste Edur threat.
Kuru Qan is portrayed as a classic wizard figure — absent-minded, seemingly dottering, but concealing vast intellect and power beneath an unassuming exterior. His magic draws on the Holds, the ancient power system that predates the Warrens, making him one of the few practitioners of this older tradition still active.
Arc by Book
Book 5: Midnight Tides
Kuru Qan serves as the kingdom's chief magical adviser, working to prepare defenses against the impending Edur invasion. He is one of the few court figures who takes the Edur seriously as a military threat, while most of the Letherii elite remain confident in their economic and military superiority.
As Ceda, Kuru Qan commands considerable resources, but the Letherii magical tradition — based on the Holds rather than the Warrens — puts him at a disadvantage against the Edur's shadow sorcery, which draws on corrupted Kurald Emurlahn and the power of the Crippled God.
During the Edur invasion, Kuru Qan's magical defenses are overwhelmed. He makes a final stand in defense of the kingdom, unleashing the full power of his Hold-based sorcery in a spectacular last battle. Kuru Qan dies defending Letheras, one of the few Letherii who fights to the end rather than capitulating.
