Raest
Also known as: The Jaghut Tyrant | Race: Jaghut | Warren/Affiliation: Omtose PhellackSummary
Raest is an ancient Jaghut Tyrant — one of the rare Jaghut who sought to dominate and enslave other races, violating the fundamental Jaghut principle of solitude. Entombed beneath the earth near Darujhistan for hundreds of thousands of years by the T'lan Imass, Raest is freed during the events of Gardens of the Moon and becomes one of the central threats of the book's climactic convergence.
Raest embodies everything that the T'lan Imass devoted their eternal existence to preventing — a Jaghut who used Omtose Phellack to dominate, building empires of ice and enslaving entire populations. His awakening in Gardens of the Moon triggers a convergence of power in Darujhistan as multiple factions scramble to deal with the threat.
Arc by Book
Book 1: Gardens of the Moon
Raest has been imprisoned beneath the hills outside Darujhistan since the time of the Imass-Jaghut wars, hundreds of thousands of years before the current age. His prison was maintained by Jaghut sorcery and the watchfulness of the T'lan Imass.
Adjunct Lorn, acting under orders from Empress Laseen, travels to Darujhistan with the T'lan Imass warrior Onos T'oolan to locate and free Raest. The plan — part of the Empress's strategy to destabilize Darujhistan and force its capitulation — is to unleash the Tyrant on the city. The Adjunct, bearing an Otataral sword, believes the Tyrant can be controlled or at least directed.
When freed, Raest proves far more powerful and uncontrollable than anticipated. He rises from his barrow wielding Omtose Phellack with devastating force, intent on reclaiming his ancient dominion. The Tyrant's emergence triggers the book's climactic convergence as Anomander Rake, the Bridgeburners, and various ascendant powers converge to stop him.
Raest battles Anomander Rake in a spectacular confrontation above Darujhistan. Despite his ancient power, Raest is ultimately contained — not destroyed — by the Azath House that rises from the ground of the Finnest Garden. The Azath, a semi-sentient structure that imprisons powerful beings, grows around Raest and traps him within its grounds, ending his threat.
Book 8: Toll the Hounds
Raest reappears in Toll the Hounds in an unexpected capacity. Still trapped within the Azath House in Darujhistan, he has become a peculiar fixture — an ancient Jaghut Tyrant serving as an eccentric caretaker of sorts. He interacts with visitors to the Azath grounds, including the undead Seguleh, with a dry humor that reveals a personality far more complex than the simple "tyrant" label suggests.
This later portrayal of Raest reflects the series' nuanced treatment of the Jaghut as a race — even a Tyrant, given enough time and confinement, develops unexpected dimensions.
