Togg
Also known as: The Wolf of Winter | Race: God (ascendant) | Warren/Affiliation: Beast Throne / Wolves of Winter (paired with Fanderay)Summary
Togg is the male Wolf God — the Wolf of Winter — who is paired with Fanderay, the She-Wolf, as the Wolves of Winter. Together they guard the Beast Throne, the seat of power over the Beast Hold, one of the oldest magical domains in the Malazan world. The Barghast spirits are closely connected to the Beast Hold where Togg dwells, reflecting the deep ties between the wolf gods and the primal, pre-civilizational forces of the world.
Togg's significance in the series grows across multiple books. In Memories of Ice, the wolves Baaljagg and Garath serve as his and Fanderay's mortal connections. In the final two books, Setoc — a young woman raised by wolves — serves as Destriant to the Wolves of Winter, channeling Togg and Fanderay's divine will into the mortal world during the last convergence.
Arc by Book
Book 3: Memories of Ice
Togg's presence is felt through the wolves Baaljagg and Garath, who travel with Lady Envy's group. These ancient, massive wolves serve as mortal vessels connected to the Wolf Gods. When the Grey Swords lose their patron Fener (who is pulled from his warren), they rededicate themselves to Togg and Fanderay — the Wolves of Winter become their new divine patrons. This transition reflects the fluidity of divine allegiance in the Malazan world: when one god falls, others rise to fill the void.
Toc the Younger becomes deeply entangled with the wolf gods during his captivity within the Pannion Domin. His suffering and death connect him to Togg's realm.Book 9: Dust of Dreams
Togg and Fanderay's influence grows through Setoc, who serves as their Destriant. Setoc channels the will of the Wolves of Winter, and the Beast Throne becomes increasingly important as the final convergence approaches. The wolf gods represent the wild, untamed divine — forces older than civilization that still hold power.
Book 10: The Crippled God
Togg and Fanderay, through Setoc and the broader spiritual landscape, play a role in the final convergence. The Beast Hold and its connections to the Barghast spirits remain relevant as the world's oldest powers stir in response to the climactic events.
