Torvald Nom

Also known as: — | Race: Human (Daru) | Warren/Affiliation: Darujhistan

Summary

Torvald Nom is a Daru from Darujhistan, a relative of Rallick Nom, who appears as a likable rogue and survivor across multiple books. Enslaved and transported far from home, Torvald's journey takes him through some of the series' most remote and dangerous territories before eventually returning him to Darujhistan.

Torvald is one of the series' most human characters — a man without magical power, ascendant connections, or military training who survives through wit, charm, and sheer tenacity. His ordinariness in extraordinary circumstances provides a grounding perspective on the cosmic events around him.

Arc by Book

Book 4: House of Chains

Torvald Nom is encountered as a slave of Slavemaster Silgar, captured from Darujhistan and transported to Genabackis. His path crosses with Karsa Orlong when the Teblor warrior is also captured and enslaved. The two develop an unlikely companionship — the enormous, violent Teblor and the quick-witted Daru make for an entertaining pair.

Torvald escapes alongside Karsa, and the two travel together through various adventures. Torvald's cleverness and social skills complement Karsa's brute force. When their paths eventually diverge, Torvald seeks to return to Darujhistan and his former life.

Book 8: Toll the Hounds

Torvald has returned to Darujhistan and married Tiserra. He works as a legitimate businessman — or tries to — while navigating the complex social web of the city. He reconnects with his relative Rallick Nom and becomes entangled in the events of the convergence that strikes Darujhistan.

His domestic life and his efforts to go straight provide a warm, human counterpoint to the cosmic dramas unfolding around him. Torvald represents the ordinary citizen caught in the wake of ascendant conflicts — a man trying to live a normal life in a world where normality is constantly disrupted.
