Quon Tali

Type: Continent | First Appeared: Book 1 (GotM) (referenced); Book 6 (BH) (visited)

Overview

Quon Tali is the homeland continent of the Malazan Empire, the heartland from which Kellanved and Dancer launched their conquest of the known world. It is a continent of old civilizations, political intrigue, and simmering discontent -- the seat of Imperial power and the source of both its greatest strength and deepest vulnerabilities. Though the Empire's wars rage across distant continents, Quon Tali remains the centre of gravity, home to the capital city of Unta and the bureaucratic, military, and political apparatus that holds the Empire together.

The continent is referenced throughout the series but is most directly experienced in The Bonehunters, when the 14th Army returns to Malaz City and confronts the treachery of Empress Laseen. Quon Tali is a land where the Empire's internal contradictions are most visible -- the tension between military and civilian authority, the legacy of Kellanved's founding vision, and the corrosive effects of power on those who wield it.

The continent also features in the novels of Ian Cameron Esslemont (Night of Knives, Return of the Crimson Guard), which explore the political upheavals within the Malazan homeland in greater detail.

Geography / Description

Quon Tali is a large continent featuring diverse geography:

The continent's climate is varied, ranging from the temperate coasts to the arid interiors and the grasslands of the Seti.

History

Quon Tali's history predates the Malazan Empire by millennia. The continent was home to numerous independent kingdoms and city-states -- Quon, Tali, the Kanese, Li Heng, and others -- that warred among themselves for centuries. The Dal Honese, the Seti, and other peoples maintained their own cultures and territorial claims.

The founding of the Malazan Empire changed everything. Kellanved and Dancer, operating from Malaz Island, rapidly expanded their power across the continent, bringing the warring kingdoms under a single banner through a combination of military genius, magical power, and ruthless pragmatism. The unification of Quon Tali was the Empire's first great achievement, creating the power base from which overseas campaigns could be launched.

After Kellanved and Dancer's assassination (and subsequent ascension as Shadowthrone and Cotillion), Empress Laseen took the throne. Her rule was marked by political purges, including the devastation of the Old Guard nobility and the tightening of the Claw's grip on Imperial security. The continent simmered with discontent, as former power brokers chafed under Laseen's control and the military grew increasingly alienated from the throne.

The return of the Crimson Guard to Quon Tali and the internal rebellions that followed are explored in Esslemont's novels, revealing the fragility beneath the Empire's apparent strength.
