Hannan Mosag

Also known as: The Warlock King | Race: Tiste Edur | Warren/Affiliation: Kurald Emurlahn (Shadow), later the Crippled God

Summary

Hannan Mosag is the Warlock King of the united Tiste Edur tribes — the leader who forged the six tribes into a single confederacy through his mastery of shadow sorcery. He is a central figure in Midnight Tides, where his ambitions set in motion the Edur invasion of Lether. However, Hannan Mosag's power is built on a terrible secret: his sorcery draws not from the true Kurald Emurlahn but from the Crippled God, making him an unwitting tool of that chained deity.

Hannan Mosag begins as a visionary leader seeking to restore the Tiste Edur to greatness, but his pact with dark powers corrupts both his body and his purpose. His arc traces a descent from proud king to broken sorcerer, reflecting the series' themes about the corruption that comes from bargaining with forces beyond one's understanding.

Arc by Book

Book 5: Midnight Tides

Hannan Mosag is introduced as the charismatic and powerful leader who has united the Tiste Edur tribes under his rule through a combination of military prowess and shadow sorcery. He commands the K'risnan — his personal cadre of sorcerer-priests — and wields power that has reshaped Edur society.

Hannan Mosag sends the Sengar brothers — Fear, Trull, Binadas, and Rhulad — on a quest to find a sword of power. This quest leads to the discovery of the cursed sword of the Crippled God, and Rhulad's death and resurrection as the Emperor of the Edur. This event fundamentally undermines Hannan Mosag's authority: the Warlock King planned to use the sword himself, but Rhulad's claim — backed by the Crippled God's power — supersedes his own.

As Rhulad rises to become Emperor, Hannan Mosag is reduced from king to adviser — still powerful but no longer supreme. The invasion of Lether proceeds under Rhulad's erratic command, with Hannan Mosag's strategic genius subordinated to Rhulad's madness.

Hannan Mosag's physical form begins to deteriorate as the true cost of his pact with the Crippled God becomes apparent. His body twists and breaks, his sorcery becomes more painful to wield, and his political position erodes. He remains dangerous — his K'risnan are formidable — but he is visibly diminished.

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

In the conquered Letherii Empire, Hannan Mosag continues to scheme from the shadows, seeking to reclaim his lost power. His body is further degraded — he is described as a broken, twisted figure who must be carried on a litter. Yet his sorcery remains potent and his ambitions undimmed.

Hannan Mosag's machinations in Reaper's Gale pit him against multiple factions, including Rhulad's court, the Letherii resistance, and the forces gathered by Fear Sengar and Silchas Ruin. His ultimate fate sees him destroyed by the consequences of the very powers he tried to harness.
