Stonny Menackis

Also known as: Stonny | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: None (caravan guard)

Summary

Stonny Menackis is a caravan guard and warrior who serves alongside Gruntle in Memories of Ice and reappears in Toll the Hounds. Fierce, abrasive, and deeply scarred by trauma, Stonny is a complex character whose story engages unflinchingly with the consequences of sexual violence and the long, difficult process of survival and recovery.

Stonny's partnership with Gruntle is one of the series' most significant non-romantic relationships between a man and a woman — they are comrades, friends, and mutual protectors, bound by loyalty and shared experience rather than romance.

Arc by Book

Book 3: Memories of Ice

Stonny works as a caravan guard alongside Gruntle, Harllo, and Buke, transporting goods through increasingly dangerous territory as the Pannion Domin expands. When their caravan is destroyed by Pannion forces, Stonny and Gruntle are drawn into the defense of Capustan.

During the fall of Capustan, Stonny is captured by Pannion soldiers and brutally raped. This act of violence is not depicted gratuitously but is treated as a serious trauma that shapes the rest of her character arc. Gruntle's subsequent rage — he becomes the vessel for Treach's divine power during the battle — is partly driven by his fury over what happened to Stonny.

Stonny survives the Siege of Capustan and the subsequent liberation, but she is deeply damaged. She becomes pregnant as a result of the assault.

Book 8: Toll the Hounds

Years later, Stonny lives in Darujhistan with the child born of her rape — a boy she struggles to connect with, as he is a constant reminder of her trauma. Her relationship with the child is complicated and painful, treated with remarkable nuance.

Gruntle remains her closest companion, though their relationship is strained by his transformation into Treach's Mortal Sword and the changes it has wrought in him. Stonny's arc in Toll the Hounds is about the long aftermath of trauma — not a neat recovery arc but an ongoing struggle with anger, grief, and the difficult work of continuing to live.
