Treach
Also known as: Trake, the Tiger of Summer, First Hero | Race: Soletaken (D'ivers origin, ascended) | Warren/Affiliation: Patron god of war (succeeds Fener)Summary
Treach — also known as Trake — is a First Hero who ascends to godhood during the course of the series, ultimately becoming the new god of war and replacing Fener when the Boar of Summer is pulled from his warren. Originally a powerful Soletaken who could take the form of two enormous tigers (making him technically a D'ivers), Treach represents the primal, savage aspect of warfare — combat stripped of glory and reduced to its bestial essence.
Treach's ascension to godhood is one of the series' key cosmological shifts, reflecting the theme that the pantheon is not static but constantly evolving through violence, sacrifice, and convergence.
Arc by Book
Book 3: Memories of Ice
Treach appears in Memories of Ice as a First Hero — a mortal who has achieved a legendary status approaching divinity. He manifests in the path of Lady Envy's group (which includes Toc the Younger, Onos T'oolan, and the Seguleh Mok, Thurule, and Senu) as they travel toward the Pannion Domin.
Treach is dying — mortally wounded and fading — but his death is not an ending. It is a transformation. His death triggers his full ascension to godhood, and he becomes the Tiger of Summer, a new god of war. This ascension is significant because it occurs simultaneously with Fener's crisis — the Boar of Summer has been dragged from his warren into the mortal world by events connected to Heboric, creating a vacancy in the divine hierarchy.
Book 4: House of Chains
Treach's influence as the new god of war is felt through his mortal champion, Gruntle, the caravan guard who was unwillingly chosen as Treach's Mortal Sword during the Siege of Capustan. Treach's bestial nature — his Warren manifests through tiger imagery and feral rage — transforms those who channel his power into savage fighters.
Treach also begins to claim the institutional structures left vacant by Fener — the Grey Swords rededicate themselves to new patrons rather than serve Treach, but others fill the void.
