Mallet
Also known as: — | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Denul (the Path of Healing)Summary
Mallet is the squad healer of the Bridgeburners' 9th Squad, serving under Sergeant Whiskeyjack. A quiet, dependable soldier-mage who channels the healing warren of Denul, Mallet is one of the most sympathetic members of the Bridgeburners. His healing abilities make him invaluable in the field, but his compassionate nature also makes him acutely aware of the suffering he cannot prevent.
Mallet embodies the series' themes of compassion and healing — he is a man who chose to use his magical talents to mend rather than destroy, serving in an army that demands both. His story across the series is one of quiet devotion and the toll that constant witnessing of violence takes on those who try to make it right.
Arc by Book
Book 1: Gardens of the Moon
Mallet serves as the healer of the 9th Squad during the Siege of Pale and the subsequent covert mission to Darujhistan. He is one of the veterans who survived the devastation at Pale, and his healing skills are put to constant use as the squad endures casualties and injuries.
During the mission in Darujhistan, Mallet plays a critical support role, tending to the wounded and helping maintain the squad's combat effectiveness. He heals Whiskeyjack's damaged knee — a persistent injury that Whiskeyjack stubbornly ignores — and struggles with the knowledge that his sergeant is pushing himself beyond what his body can sustain.
Mallet's Denul abilities also make him sensitive to the magical disturbances swirling around the convergence in Darujhistan. He senses the presence of ascendant powers and the growing danger but, like many of the Bridgeburners, can only watch as forces far beyond his control shape events.
Book 3: Memories of Ice
Mallet continues serving with the 9th Squad, now under Captain Ganoes Paran's overall command, as the Bridgeburners join the campaign against the Pannion Domin. His healing abilities are pushed to their limits during the brutal fighting at the Siege of Capustan and the Siege of Coral.
During the campaign, Mallet witnesses the devastating losses that reduce the Bridgeburners from a storied company to a handful of survivors. His healer's empathy makes each death a personal blow. He is among the survivors of the Fall of the Bridgeburners at Coral, where the company is officially disbanded.
Mallet's most significant act in Memories of Ice is his final healing of Whiskeyjack's knee — a symbolic gesture that comes too late, as the leg's weakness contributes to Whiskeyjack's death in combat against Kallor. The knowledge that he could have healed it earlier, had Whiskeyjack allowed it, haunts Mallet deeply.
Book 8: Toll the Hounds
Mallet resurfaces in Darujhistan years after the Bridgeburners' dissolution, now living as a civilian alongside other veterans like Picker, Blend, Antsy, and Bluepearl, who run K'rul's Bar (the former temple of K'rul). Despite being removed from military life, Mallet continues to serve as a healer and companion to his old squad-mates.
His end comes during the events of Toll the Hounds when old debts and new threats converge on Darujhistan once more. Mallet's death is a poignant moment — a healer who spent his life mending others ultimately unable to save himself.
